I know no family where dad wouldn't be having an additional role of leftovers consumer, therefore it must be a universal rule. Dancing at all, let alone well, is a skill I lack strongly, which is why I'm avoiding going to discos and some weddings of distant relatives whom I barely know. If I'm present there, I usually do as the other people you mentioned, sitting & eating all the time. Right now best "moves" I can do is headbanging during metal concert and pirouettes in my Jedi robes when nobody's around. I don't have any upcoming dancing in the foreseeable future, but sooner rather than later I will need to sign up for a course.
That's such a great photo of you four! I love the ones with personalities showing. Our kids' schools never had these family dances and I was always relieved. Not that MrP couldn't dance because he was very good, but he liked to twirl around and I'm not such a good follower. Without those dances he had to wait until her wedding five years ago before he could enjoy dancing with our daughter. That version of "Watch Me Nae Nae" will never be the same but daughter was thrilled to have that special dance with her daddy. And, hey, I enjoyed watching them dance.....he's still got it!
Some nights after cooking dinner and cleaning up after, I was too tired to eat dessert. By the next day all the cookies, cake or pie would be gone and once again I didn’t get a single piece! Then I hit upon a fantastic idea, that was actually kinda evil.... I’m the only person in my family who liked cottage cheese. So there was always a carton in the fridge. My evil plan was to hide some dessert in the cottage cheese container, and have it when I wanted it. (Insert evil laugh) They never did figure out my camouflaged hidden dessert trick.
Your girls are so cute. Our daughter's school only had a family dance situation in grade school for the harvest dance in the fall, where the kids would wear their halloween costumes. We went to those until she was in 6th grade, then she politely asked us not to come the last 2 years, because 7th and 8th graders could stay an hour later than the rest, including parents. It was kind of a right of passage, so the "upperclass" parents didn't generally go. Which my husband was so relieved about. And then we were sad after 7 years of it. Isn't that just how it is? Her dad also cut a RUG at those things, and made all the kids giggle a lot, especially because he has very little rhythm. Our daughter was "embarrassed" but I think also secretly happy that her dad was one of the ones having fun with them and willing to play the fool so to speak. I see you have that in common. Good Daddy! <3 Hope Waffle's fingers are o.k.
A few days later, her fingers look fine. A painful but ultimately not too damaging lesson. As for dancing, all good dads are part disciplinarian, part court jester. It's in the job description.

Pirouetting in Jedi robes is the height of culture. I hope there is a lightsaber involved.
You betcha!

That's hilarious! They also played "Watch Me Nae Nae." All the kids knew the dance. I was totally lost, as usual.

Very fun to read. Thanks. I love Lucy rolling her eyes in the photo. One of these days, that is the picture she will treasure.

I agree 100%! My dad was the same and I have the best memories of his zany sense of humor and how silly we could be together!
What a great family photo! Did you consciously color-coordinate, or was that a happy coincidence?
We took a serious photo and then a silly one. Clearly the kids weren't on the same page as their super cool parents.
Hate to break your heart but 3 of my 4 friends are from Middle School! I was even briefly married to one of them!
It is, but there's always a chance they'll be back. I don't think they're moving far, and they might discover home schooling isn't for them.
