My kids did the impossible, or at least the highly improbable: They made it a full week at school without getting kicked out. In any other year, that would have been unremarkable, but this is 2020, when even mundane events like going to a real classroom five days in a row feels like a rare privilege. Actually, the privileged one is me since I can get rid of my kids. Every day after I drop them off at school, I speed away like I reverse stole something. Not that I don’t love my children. I just love them more after a break that lasts through normal business hours.
Even after going back to school, my kids retained the new habits they picked up during their two-week quarantine. Chief among them was playing outside in the dark. The switch to daylight savings time and a streak of unseasonably warm weather last week inspired my kids to run around in our yard well after sunset, which now happens shortly after breakfast.
