You say "panic clean," I use the wonderful Old English word SCURRYFUNGE. (Means the same thing.)

I must add that to my vocabulary immediately!

Well, fortunately cake freezes well.

That's quitter talk. I like all my cakes to come with a sense of urgency.

Sounds like a great weekend! Don’t I remember seeing a photo you took of your grocery cart full of nearly expired cupcakes a year ago, though? Consider laying off the cake and stocking up on salty snacks to go with the beer, instead.

Every cupcake was eaten that time! And all the mini-donuts after that!

I love reading about your board game weekends.

Three days of playing board games with great squad? Count and let me iiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnn!!!

I too don’t enjoy setting money on fire and had just this little gambling experience. Five years ago on a family holiday we played poker for small amount of money. The session was long and at some time turned into a theological dispute with two sides led by my aunt and oldest cousin. Way into the night we ended, but the winnings were never paid, so for five years now I'm waiting for my PLN 0,20 that I won fair and square. For equally long period I've been wondering what I could buy for such a fortune.

It's not the first time I observe that it seems Midwesterners have very similar policy on providing food & drinks for their guests as Poles, and I'm a big fan of that hospitality, especially done your way.

"There is such a thing as too many penises." - my junior high colleagues would disagree. For them male genitalia was like a coat of arms and I'm more than certain they would've loved participating in that drinking game.

It's a hard limit to hit, but it exists. I didn't believe it either until I found myself there. Quite the traumatic experience.

At this point I'm afraid to ask...

Growing up, my parents and their friends played games almost every Saturday night. The games were mostly card games like, Make a Million, Rook, Pit, etc. As young adults we found friends and continued Saturday night as game night. For food, we had popcorn, sodas, frozen pizza (the cheapest I could find) and brownies. We played Rook, Pit, Uno, and Rummy-O. One time we decided to play Monopoly with 3 couples. Worst decision ever! One couple came close to leaving in separate cars. The decision was made to never play Monopoly with this particular group again. What's this breaking up at 11pm?? We always played until at least midnight and sometimes 1-2 am. Many great memories of friends we no longer live near and of just having a great time together.

You had more energetic guests than we did. By 11 p.m., we're all zombies by 11 p.m.. As for Monopoly, that's not safe for any group.

We also had a gaming day this weekend. We played Dungeons and Dragons (our DM is a jerk that almost killed a few of us) and after played Wyrmspan which is similar to Wingspan except with dragons.

Expand full comment

Wyrmspan was our first game of the weekend! I love the mechanics but am meh on the theme. I like the pretty birbs of the original game.

I started with RPG games so I love the dragon theme.

What is it with Telestrations and male genitalia? We have had the same problem (haha)!

The experience seems to be universal. It seems we're all immature middle schoolers at heart.

What fun! But next time go with salty snacks instead of cake. Goes better with beer in my opinion.

Was Peter’s gluten free pasta bake good? Will he share the recipe (via you) if so?

Expand full comment

I can ask him for the recipe. Everything he makes is amazing. We had plenty of salty snacks, but Lola handled those. I was only responsible for the stuff no one ate.

Board games, shouty smack talk with friends, free-flowing drinks, tables laden with food - life does not get much better than this! The ROI is astronomical!

Expand full comment

Absolutely! The most entertainment per dollar money can buy.

I’m worn out just reading about all this fun😉

Fun is exhausting. Luckily, napping is also fun.

If I hadn’t had the same thing done to me via my son in Chicago I would probably question that anyone has that many friends willing to do physical games. LOL. When I lived in Scotland all those years ago the big game of the day was Risk. Everyone took it very seriously…except for Kathy which is why she won all the time. That board was thrown into a wall more than a few times. Anyway, when I went up to visit a few years ago they wanted to play. I hadn’t played a board game since my youngest grew up. I found it surprisingly, to me, fun as hell. I’ll stick to “Township” online but once in a while, sure, I’d handle the cards. BTW, I play Township because I can play alone, on my own time and for as long as I want to. I haven’t skipped a day in…6 years. No matter what, I logged in. It’s a thing. For a “free” game I’ve spent a small fortune. :D

I'll have to look up Township. It must be good if you've been playing it for six straight years. You might have just kicked off my next addiction.

I love playing games with my 2 girls(10 and 12). What are your favourite party/fun games that are playable with 3 players ?

I also love strategy, but they're not always up girls that. I love 7 Wonders, Queendomino...

Three is a tough player count. I'd go with Pandemic or Clank. I love those at any number.

I don't know what kind of goofy friends you have, but cake disappears at my house.

Sounds like a really fun weekend was had by all!

The problem was that I didn't slice and serve them. Expecting people to slice their own pieces was a bridge too far. People want pre-proportioned snacks.

Expand full comment

Yes. Even if they eat several portions, as I would.
