Listen now (3 mins) | Since today is a federal holiday when no one checks their email (for shame), I’m sending out my normal Monday morning email tomorrow, which is Tuesday, if my math is correct. In the meantime, I’m sharing my normal weekly discussion thread with everyone rather than just with paid subscribers. This weeks topic: What’s your own personal sign that the summer is over? Is it the arrival of pumpkin spice everything, a chill in the air, or that weird ghost that haunts your upstairs bathroom? Maybe he’ll at least hand you more toilet paper. For me, it’s when we pull out long sleeve shirts and pants from storage. More details in the audio file above (and in the terrible auto transcription below). See you in the comments.
Having worked at a community college for 28 years, Fall began when Fall semester began, near the end of August. Everything was more immediate, many more staff, faculty and students were around, more meetings, more work. I enjoyed that.
I still miss the signs of Fall when my kids were growing up: the end of softball and baseball games, nobody being interested in the pool, marching band practice, Homecoming.
Don't miss: my kids leaving once again for college after being home for a couple of months.
But the sure sign of Fall for me is when I no longer wear shorts or skirts with bare legs. Which just means one thing: no more religious shaving of legs!
Just the cooler weather - and this year it isn't getting much cooler yet. But I have a different question. Don't your kids grow over the summer? So, does Betsy get new clothes and the others get the hand me downs? Are Waffle's clothes too small and get donated?
Here in Az., because the weather doesn't change, the start of fall is triggered by the metal storage containers at Walmart signifying Christmas is almost here, so fall must be here too, right? Sad but true
After thinking about it for a moment, I guess to me I believe that fall is here when I can step outside my back door early in the morning and I almost reflexively take in one of the deepest breaths that I am ever able to take because of the refreshing coolness of the early morning air. That's when I believe that we have reached the fall season
I live in England, UK. Our kids take their summer break from the middle of July until the first week of September, so for us summer is over when the kids go back to school!
Summer is over when the pool gets too cold for swimming. Sometimes it's because the night temps drop below 60, and other years it's because it starts raining all day every day.
For me the day summer ends is the Tuesday after Labor Day. You see, I live near the Atlantic ocean. Just a few blocks away, and dogs are not allowed on the beach from the weekend before Memorial Day, to the Tuesday after Labor Day. So the Tuesday after Labor Day we go back to taking our morning walk on the beach. Other than that we can only walk on the beach when it rains and even the life guards go inside. We have also been inside a lot this year due to the heat, and having a fluffy boy like Neelix means avoiding the heat.
Growing up in NY, it was when school started, the start of apple picking season and the changing of the leaves from green to gorgeous orange, red and yellows. Now that we've moved to Florida, there is NO fall. It is hot until it's not for 2 weeks in December. I forget what month it is on a regular basis, and have to go based on my kids being in school, but even then I sometimes forget how long they've been in school so far. It's quite a problem! The fact that halloween/pumpkin spice season starts so early to adjust for Christmas decorations starting sooner doesn't help. I NEVER know what season or month we are in!
Discussion Thread: How Do You Know Summer is Over?
It's when we can turn off the air conditioner and cover it because we're sure we won't need it again until next year.
Which means in MO that two days later we uncover it... 🙄

I know it is fall when I start drinking Octoberfest beers.
I like cold weather and tolerate it better than most. (I can go sock-less until it snows at least
an inch!😜) So for me it would be the leaves falling. My favorite part of the year!
My family used to go to Brown County in the fall and we had a wonderful time.
It’s so pretty and the nice crisp air…ahhhhhh.🍁🍂
Summer is officially over when school starts. It could be 90 degrees, but a regular schedule starts up and the relaxed days of summer are history.

For me it is autumn when I have to swap my thinner coat for my thicker coat. It is never really warm where I live (Isle of Man)

It's that moment when I step outside and the air is soft and cool. When there is a little give from the oppressive summer heat.

When my house shifts its weight, and the kitchen door sticks.
I can't wait to move to Hawai'i.

For me it’s the end of hurricane season.
