I thought I read that “ The Netherland’s are incredibly that”.

It made me laugh until I realized my mistake.

Also, “I regret to inform you that you are from Florida” is applicable in many situations.

As European, I fully agree with everything.

As someone who only briefly visited France, Germany, and Switzerland for a few weeks back in college, I can't find a single non-truth in any of your statements. It all seems right based on my minimal experience. I'm especially looking forward to your words about Strasbourg, the wonderfully adorable little city of unlikeliness.

Quite possible. The one the fisherman pulled out when we were there was over 6 ft long.

I enjoyed my first trip through Europe via your story. Thanks for the laughs!

Welcome back! Glad you had some excitement, if not some fun.

Great newsletter! My husband and I went to Germany and France in 2000 and my friend told me the "A, B, C's of Europe": Another Bloody Church, Another Bloody Castle!

I felt like a bad person when I looked at a cathedral that took 600 years to build and shrugged because it was just like the four cathedrals before it.

Have you ever been to Pittsburgh? Its like the Eastern Ukraine but less orderly and more dangerous.

Have not been there yet. I'm sure that would be quite a newsletter.

<<If a castle is in one piece, it’s because it was built in a stupid place and wasn’t guarding anything important. >> This is the truest thing you've ever written. We visited England/Scotland/Ireland, beautiful ruins of castles and abbeys on their borders, particularly the England/Scotland border. Want to see one more intact? Yeah, head way away from the borders into no-where-land. I mentioned that and someone said oh go to Wales then, nobody attacked there, LOL

I can’t even begin to imagine the horror stories that would spawn if you ever dared to visit Greece. But it would definitely be entertaining. Just don’t stand in front of Leonidas when there is a deep and dark well behind you.

My favorite part about that well is that the Greeks didn't believe in safety railings.

Right? Who needs safety when we knew even back then that we’re all going to die.

Love your story! I am from the Netherlands and i would not run you over! You are more than welcome to hop on the back of my bike and i will give you a tour! And show you some hills in the Netherlands! I live in the South, there we have a few hills!

I imagine finding a hill in the Netherlands is harder than finding Bigfoot. Guard your secret knowledge of this hill.

Ever been to Ireland? There are an unbelievable number of castles there too. Definitely enjoyed the first installment in this newsletter series.

Expand full comment

Every picture from Ireland is beautiful, so I imagine they have an overabundance of useless castles.

Expand full comment

Sounds about right, although we do have a couple of small hills in the south of the Netherlands. And we are kind of dangerous on our bikes, specially for tourists ;)

And it is just boring euro cents, i like your mini euros option better.

My favorite saying:

The difference between Americans and Europeans is that Americans think 100 years is old and Europeans think 100 miles is far.

I have always wanted to see a castle up close. That's what watching Wizard of Oz does to ya. I'm enjoying your observations as I will never get to Europe: I won't fly and I get seasick on a boat. Kinda leaves me to enjoy from afar!

I thought for sure I'd go back someday. But after 24 hours of travel with a terrible cold to get home, I think I might never leave the house again.
