Please tell Betsy that I trick or treated until I went to college. It's free candy. I did not care who judged me. Also, as an adult, I love when teenagers come to the door. They tend to be so polite, and even if they aren't, they're enjoying the last vestiges of childhood. How could I not support that?? Here's my advice to Betsy. You have your whole life to be an adult. You only get to be a kid for a short time. Enjoy all the free candy childhood provides!!!

Hear, hear! She should stay a kid as long as she can. You set a great example.

Self consciousness is the bane of the teenage years, I'm afraid. It's sad, because teens miss out on some really fun things because of it.

Very true. No need to be self-conscious at Halloween. That's what masks are for!

Love the Halloween costumes!

Excuse me while I have a mini attack after reading “Betsy’s boyfriend” repeatedly. Wow. I thought the almost dying newsletters were the shockers. Oh lordy!

I am equally upset. She wasn't supposed to have a boyfriend until she was in her thirties.

I’m a little sad that Betsy is reaching that age. You fought the good fight dad. Perhaps next year she wears a mask so no one know who she is.

That's what I'm thinking. At least I've still got her for the real trick-or-treating on Thursday.

Last year, we had a group of teens who came as cheerleaders and football players. They were a lot of fun. As long as they’re dressed up, we don’t care how old the “kid” is.

That's a good line. If they're in costume and follow the rules, I say let them have candy.

Last year we had more teenagers than grade schoolers. They were having a blast.

They are fun b/c they’re obviously enjoying themselves.

I know I've mentioned this before, but my daughter, almost 20 and in college, has never stopped trick-or-treating. She went all through high school and now trick-or-treats in Georgetown and at the embassies in DC where she goes to school. She never cared what anyone thought (and also helped take out younger cousins and neighbors each year). Now she attends college Halloween dress-up parties as well and has a ball. Hope Betsy continues to go, too-cool boyfriend or not. ;-)

I would be delighted if Betsy followed in your daughter's footsteps. The holiday is too fun to give up on. Truthfully, I bet too-cool boyfriend would sing a different tune if I let him come trick-or-treating with us.

In my hometown, there was no trick-or-treating allowed after fifth or sixth grade. It was hard watching younger siblings dress up and get candy when I couldn’t, until I realized I could take them around as their chaperone.

That's a harsh cut-off! Way to work the chaperone angle. That's a useful loophole.

I think some went out until they reached high school. Going out as teens was a big no-no. Small Midwestern rural town.

All of you look great, tho I’d forgotten the overall negativity of the Inside Out emotions. Really, your kids are too much fun for that!

And I’m really glad Betsy is joining in one more time. Next year she’ll probably want to help her boyfriend (no doubt a different one) hand out treats at his house.

I feel your pain: 15 has decided there's to be no trick or treating this year.

I guess I'll be buying half price almond joys for *myself* on Friday morning.

I was 5’7” at 11 years old, in the 6th grade. Several people asked me if I didn’t think I was too old to trick or treat. This was in 1970 when adults prided themselves in shaming children. That was my last year.

I feel you. I was 6'2" the last time I went trick or treating, when I was thirteen. Getting taller is a curse.

I would trick or treat if I thought I could get away with it. Who doesn’t want all that free candy?! Sadly, in Sweden, it really is just little kids who do it!

Please prepare yourself… she’s not going to go with you guys next year. Hope this year’s haul is record breaking…as it likely will be the last. UNLESS you can convince the boyfriend to join? (I can’t believe she has a boyfriend and you haven’t fed him to the pigs yet?!?!) 🤣

She already asked if he could come. I said no this time, but I'll give in next year if that's what it takes to sway her.

Great costumes! Good that Betsy will still participate in the familial sugar haul of the year.

There are so many advantages to youth, but one benefit of being more advanced in years is caring less about what other people think 😉.

My kids went trick or treating all thru high school. This year my youngest (19) decided he is too old and wants to handout candies. I'm sad cuz I usually do that dressed in a black dress and witch hat. So I'm wearing my witch hat everywhere. Get lots of nods of approval and even a few comments "nice hat".

I love this theme - it is the same one my almost 14 year old granddaughter and a group of her friends chose- they are only missing 2 of the characters. I hope someone gets a group picture of them!

My 12 year decided she didn't want to trick or treat at all this year. *sigh* I feel ya James, I feel ya.
