Listen now (20 min) | Looking back, I have a hard time believing this story really happened. It seems more like the fever dream of someone younger, hipper, and more energetic than me. Yet the blurry pictures prove it was all real. For a week straight, my wife Lola and I, the two lamest people I know, were the hardest partying passengers on a boat of two hundred souls. We stayed up late and woke up early, out drinking and outlasting people older than us and younger than us and everyone in between. It all came to a head in one of the wildest, most unbelievable nights of our lives. There are no pictures of that part (thank God), so you’ll just have to take my word for it. This is that tale.
I love this story! Similar situation happened to us on a cruise, where we randomly met a guy who we thought was 'just like us'. We were invited to his stateroom, and not only was there butler service and catered food, these people had a baby grand piano in their room! Holy heck, we were lucky we had our own tiny bathroom.
I aspire to, one day, end one social engagement at the right moment, right before maximum fun begins to turn into overstaying my welcome. You achieved that moment; you are my hero.
Sounds like an amazing trip! I did a tour through Europe about 10 years ago that was primarily booked by retiree’s, had some of the most fun ever! Loved the story about buying chocolates, had a similar story in Brussels.
I very much commend you on your choice of vodka under the circumstances. I would rather buy either the crappiest bottle or the most unbelievably expensive bottle as long as they were not from that particular country that you referenced I hope you have a wonderful time
I just found you through Clint Edwards who shared your cruise 🛳 post. I love it I love it I love it! Now I've got to follow your Substack, don't I?!! 😉
We are currently on the same cruise. We can identify with EVERYTHING you wrote about! So. Much. Fun.
I love this story! Good on you for sticking the landing on the whole night!
What a great story! Loved the wrap-up! This is one of those stories you could put in a file on "How to Live Life".
What a wonderful adventure; Cheers to stepping out of your comfort zone and having a blast!!
WOW, what a fantastic trip you and Lola had. Thanks for sharing.

I am living for a “Lola’s version of the trip” newsletter!!!!!!! Amazing

Great story! I love the “both end of the social spectrum” part. And IMO you and Lola would be welcome anywhere.
It's almost worth the 32 euro loss to get the story. Almost.
I love that you partied with the crew! What a great concept to make friends with any and everybody. Fantastic vacay!

I am now inspired to try and befriend everyone on a cruise should I get lucky enough to be on one small enough!
What a great experience! But I must know; were the brandy milkshakes any good?
