I was there among Jim's closest friends, too! (I was in your section, just to your right.) I stayed until the end and it was worth it. You missed some legends singing their greatest hits. I hope you went upstairs and viewed the collection of guitars and historical items. The only thing that would have made my evening perfect was if Jim Irsay hadn't sung and I had met you, my favorite local author!

We stayed until about fifteen minutes till the end, although we were wandering around for most of it. Never found the guitars, though. Guess I need to improve my wandering skills. Maybe we'll bump into each other at Jim's next party.

Sounds fun. Who were the legends singing their greatest hits?

Well, the Jim Irsay Band included Kenny Wayne Shepard(Blue on Black) on guitar, Kenny Aronoff( Mellencamp 's drummer for years)on drums, and Mike Mills(REM) on bass. Guest singers were Ann Wilson (Heart) singing "Barracuda "", Peter Wolf (J. Geils Band) singing "Centerfold " and "Freeze Frame ", and Stephen Stills singing "Southern Cross" and "Woodstock ". Hometown favorite, John Mellencamp, ended the show with "Pink Houses" and "Small Town ". These were just my highlights. Too many other songs to list from all these amazing artists.

Oh wow! That is an all-star lineup. James made it sound like a glorified garage jam session but that’s serious talent you’ve listed.

It was a little of both. Either way, I got what I paid for.

Sounds like a nightmare to me. Going out. People. Expensive beer. Beer (I’m a cosmo’s gal). Old white billionaire showing off. Parking and walking. Nah, give me a day of no people, no going anywhere, no doing anything and I’m a happy camper. Hey, I turned 66 today. I don’t need “fun” to have fun, lol.

To be fair, it was expensive free beer. It was more people than I like, too, but it actually felt less crowded then Gencon.

Happy Birthday, hope you got to stay in away from people LOL

Looks like it was pretty awesome. Stephen Stills, John Mellencamp, Mike Mills from R.E.M? I'd actually pay money to see that!

All snark aside, it was a good time and I will go again the next time I get personally invited.

I was there too. Not only did they have the instruments (40+ guitars: Paul McCartney, Kurt Cobain, Prince, Johnny Cash, David Gilmour, Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia; Beatles drum kit, Elton John's piano,....), you could see his collection of Americana, including JFK's rocking chair, letters from Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Declaration of Independence, Kerouac's 119' typed 'On the Road' scroll, Stallone's original Rocky manuscript, Muhammad Ali's champion belt and robe, Jackie Robinson's bat,... It went on and on. Pretty amazing collection.

I managed to not find the massive display of guitars. I suspect they heard I was coming and hid them away.

I've been hit or miss reading your columns lately due to travel and summer. The title of this was so intriguing that I took the time to at least start in and I'm glad I did.

It was very entertaining and I could almost imagine myself on your entire journey from ticket acquisition to leaving early. If there are Substack awards for best column, I would definitely submit this one.

I humbly accept this non-existent Substack award. Enjoy your summer and your travel. I'll be here when you get back.

Sorry your kids have to make the day up. During the teacher's strike here in Mesa,Az a couple of years back (before pandemic so before distance learning) the kids were off for 2 weeks and they did not have to make a day up because, come to find out there is a built in 3 weeks extra. Why??? It's Mesa, Az., we don't get snow like I did going to school in Cincinnati, so just why are those 3 extra weeks in the schedule? Glad I am done, my youngest graduated last year and is taking a year off then going to NAU. I did figure out something that happened the day he graduated, I now have no idea what day of the week or the date is, and I am seriously liking this LOL

Must have been the weekend of free concerts. My son's girlfriend had an extra ticket to a Night Ranger concert because someone bailed out at the last minute so he went instead. I'd never heard of the group, but he said they were great, had VIP seats right up front, photos with the band, etc. My son is all about freebies so I think he loved every minute of it, even if the band guys were almost as old as MrP and I are. The killer was the tickets were $250 each and that was for an oldies band. Good grief, hate to think what the current groups can and do charge.

I know when Taylor Swift was in Phoenix, I believe the cheapest tickets were $2,000, if you could get them because she broke Ticket Master, so maybe those were the scalpers prices?

I was a little concerned we were headed for Indecent Proposal territory with that title, the concert story was a good outcome, lol.
