Our trash days here used to be the Wild West. You could put your bag in the trash can or near the trash can or on top of the trash can. It didn't really matter because none of those things guaranteed the garbage men would actually take it. It came down to what mood they were in and how nearby you were to tip them at the last minute.

But recently we went to a new type of trash can that gets lifted by the mechanical arm on the trash truck. On the one hand, hooray for mechanization. There's no reason that these guys should be breaking their backs to lift heavy trash. I mean, the other day I found a rock collection inside my house. An actual rock collection. And yes, I threw it away. So yeah, our trash is way too heavy.

But on the other hand, we now have a very strict set of rules. The garbage man went from lifting everything by hand to lifting nothing by hand. If it doesn't fit in that trash can that gets lifted by the mechanical arm, it is not getting taken away. And let m…
